Beware the Fantasy Shopping Trap

March 22nd, 2016 admin

I see a lot of interesting habits in my wardrobe consulting role, some totally wacky, some just a little quirky, and everything in between. These habits are typically revealed during the edit, and the obvious skeletons (hoarding, duplicative purchases, overspending) frequently overshadow a far more common, and potentially more costly, shopping pattern.

Fantasy shopping: purchasing for the life that you wish you had, not the life you actually lead. While this approach can be an effective way to escape reality, it is never an effective way to build a wardrobe. One way to combat this is to get back to brass tacks, using your monthly calendar as a guide. The more realistic approach, aka one where your schedule is taken into consideration, is the best strategy to ensure that you have what you need. If your schedule is packed with work and your dress code is business and business casual, you probably don’t need a closet filled with bohemian brunch outfits.

Moreover, if your schedule is one characterized by multiple outfit changes and venues, be prepared. Carve out some time during the week or weekend to select outfits based on your events. In matters of the wardrobe,  proactive is always better than reactive, and you’re more likely to get to your destination in a timely manner. Contrary to popular belief, being fashionable and late CAN be mutually exclusive 😉
