Trend Spotting – Fall 2018

September 29th, 2018 admin

Fall weather is finally upon us, which means that Fall fashion is upon us, and I can honestly say that nothing makes me happier. As someone who operates in only two mindsets 1) wearing Fall fashion and 2) dreaming of wearing fall fashion, I am continually in trend spotting mode. My top picks are as follows:

Western Influence

Arguably the strongest theme of the season, western and prairie styles are available in abundance. From cowboy boots to belt buckles, tiered skirts to bandanas, there is plenty from which to choose. I always love a floral western vibe a la Isabel Marant, and fully support the return of the Dior Saddle Bag, having carefully saved two of mine from 2002, so I’m on the horse. Chloe and Zimmerman are riding as well.

All Snake Everything

Snake print is directional, and designers are offering it in both ready to wear and accessories. The easiest way to participate is by choosing an shoe or belt and there are options for all styles and pricepoints. I love a pointy snake loafer or kitten heel bootie update to elevate fall basics. If you’re feeling a bit daring a snake midi skirt or dress will do: if you’re feeling super daring opt into the full snake expression.

Leopard

The classic animal print gets an update, with oversized cardigans from Loewe, maxi dresses from Temperly and Rixo, and coats and shoes galore. Lower priced retailers have also gotten the memo, with Zara and Asos offering several affordable styles, making the trend very accessible.

Shine

Sequin and shine remain strong, and designers like Erdem showed them with more serious tailoring expressions like double breasted houndstooth and crisp white shirting. Chanel offered shine in abundance, albeit with glossier fabrics., and the trickle down has graced the lower priced retailers

Menswear

As is typical in Fall, the menswear Seville Row influence is strong, this year cropping up in both fabrication and silhouette. Double breasted jackets done in Prince of Wales plaid are my top pick, and I love them balanced with feminine pieces or classic blue jeans and a conical heel bootie.

Also worth noting: head to toe fuchsia expressions are strong, puff shoulders on are relevant, and the fashion set is updating their pleated midi skirts by pairing them back to slouchy sweaters.
