Honor Your Comfort Zone

I recently had the pleasure of working with a new client who, after the birth of her second child, felt she needed to reinvent herself. She hadn’t purchased anything besides maternity clothing in about four years and wasn’t connecting with her wardrobe. Aside from a few pairs of shoes she loved, everything else was negotiable.

After a very healthy edit (read: mass exodus), I presented her with a suggested Buy Plan to rebuild her foundation. Her knee jerk reaction was to try “all of the trends” to see if there was a hidden Boho/Edgy/Femme/Preppy alter ego she hadn’t yet revealed (spoiler alert: there wasn’t). I decided to also incorporate some staples that had the edgy feminine vibe that I thought best represented her personality while honoring her comfort zone.

During our initial presentation, she tried all of the pieces. The trendy pieces felt too costumey, but the right pairing of classics with a twist had her feeling just right. Two nights later she sent me a stunning pic of herself and captioned “I feel gorgeous”.

The takeaway: you don’t have to swing the styling pendulum aggressively to find your signature look. Tweaking fit, fabric and details can be all you need for reinvention. With styling, as in life, sometimes the smallest changes can be the most impactful.
