Investment Piece Purchasing 101

July 17th, 2013 admin

I am a huge proponent of the hi/low shopping and styling approach. In my opinion, mixing investment pieces with fast fashion is the best way to keep your wardrobe fresh without spending a fortune. If this is something that appeals to you and you are interested in adding some basic investment pieces to your repertoire, keep the following in mind when shopping.

Jewelry: Invest in iconic or signature jewelry pieces. If you can find pieces that you love and wear them every day, the cost per wear will decrease to the point where it is a great investment. My Cartier bracelet was expensive but I have worn it every day for over three years – at this point, I am spending more money each day at Starbucks.

Handbags: Choose classic bag silhouettes from luxury houses that have a long-standing reputation for quality. Avoid “it” bags, trendy shapes or hardware, and expensive pieces from newly launched brands.

Shoes: Choose classic shapes (think pump or d”orsay) in animal print calf-hair, black leather or nude patent. Once the basic categories are fulfilled, try fun colors or patterns in classic shapes. Beyond that, if you have room in your discretionary spending, buy the shoes that you otherwise feel you would die without.

The goal is to end up with items that you love love love that also stand the test of time. Like any other long term relationship, you will know when it feels right. If you aren”t sure, move on.
