Prime Time to Consign

September 15th, 2012 admin

Something incredible happened to me this week – something I had been anxiously anticipating for five months. I was able to wear a sweater in NYC without passing out from heat exhaustion or melting into a puddle on the subway. It was glorious.

Autumn is undoubtedly my favorite season. I love the weather, I love the clothing and I love the “back to school” feeling of newness and reinvention. In fact, I love it so much that I start to transition my wardrobe into fall in the beginning of July.

If you haven’t already transitioned your closet into fall, now is the perfect time to do so.  The weather is changing, consignment boutiques are looking for fall merchandise and designers have debuted their Spring Collections at NYFW.  If you are so inclined, you can clean and organize your closet, make some money consigning the fall merchandise that you are no longer (or never were) compelled to wear. The best part about consigning your items early in the season is that you lengthen their retail exposure and will most likely net more per item.  I recommend establishing relationships with the managers of the consignment stores in your area, identifying what labels and product categories each store does well with and divvying up your goods accordingly.  After all – maximizing the resale of your unwanted goods will always be fashionable. So, come on ladies, let’s get this show on the road!

PS – while making the switch you can also sort your Summer goods into keep/consign/donate piles and store accordingly. Having access to the S/S  2013 shows (I like the look at the images on style.com) is great because you can get a sense of  what will translate next season.
