Spring Trend Forecast

January 26th, 2018 admin

While sitting in my new office during an ice-related two-hour school delay this week, it suddenly hit me: I am no longer a New Yorker and I need to buy an ice scraper for my car. Not the most shocking realization, but I spent the first part of the winter denying the cold as if it was negotiable. I grew up in MA, went to college in Boston and have spent the better part of my adult life in NYC, but for some reason I am suddenly such a wimp about winter weather.

Maybe it ‘s the bomb cyclone/artic temp/school snow cancellation, or the fact that I now have to shovel, but I find myself daydreaming of warm, sunny beaches and contemplating Spring ’18 fashion trends for my clients. I have historically been more excited by the Fall textures and colors, but this cold weather is inspiring an excitement for Spring that can be best described as escapism.

Aside from the “new” floral and “new” trench iterations that debut each year, the following five trends feel fresh, viable, and functional if you are the hopeful type who likes to transition as early in the season as possible:

Socks with heels:

The lace sock makes a statement when paired with a feminine peep-toe heel. This is the trend that I am personally the most intrigued by, and also the trend that needs to be handled with the most care, as it is easy to skew too 80’s and lose the chic impact. Look to the Erdem Spring ’18 show for visual inspiration.

Fringe

Fringe takes a more sophisticated turn in neutral colors, as shown by Celine and Loewe, and can be found on ready-to-wear and accessories alike. For a graphic statement, try mixing black and white, a la Balmain.

Moody Pastels

Lavender emerges as the strongest hue, looking fresh paired back to both camel leather, transitional back to heather gray, and moody back to black and navy. More universally flattering than its blush counterpart “millenial pink”, you’ll see this pastel in both solid iterations and worked into prints.

Shine

Shimmer was prevalent on the Spring runways, in a vast range of materials. From fine lurex and small sequins at Chloe to large paillettes at Gucci, metallic details were hugely impactful and will satisfy even the most selective of fashion barracudas.

Highest Rise

Waist cinching remains strong, with high-rise styles running the gamut from paper bag to corset construction. This is great news, as these help to elongate the leg on curvy, petite frames and help to add shape to tall, lean frames. Look to Saint Laurent and Isabel Marant for inspiration, and H&M and Asos for lower priced activation.

And there you have it. The Spring Trend Forecast: the only near term forecast I am excited about.
