Wardrobe Building 101

April 26th, 2013 admin

Back in the day when I worked in corporate fashion a large part of my responsibility was ensuring that each of my stores had merchandise that was easy to mix and match. It was an equation that could be solved – regardless of the store’s budget – with a little creativity and focus.

Begin with a color palette grounded in black and white, add a neutral (I prefer gray), two pop colors and two prints that work in conjunction. Next, make sure each piece in the assortment has at least two friends. A cohesive statement can be made with eight pieces when done correctly. Focus on the following:

  • one fitted jacket or blazer
  • one printed blouse and one solid blouse
  • one solid t-shirt
  • one striped sweater
  • one printed bottom
  • two solid bottoms

Once your closet feels friendlier, add another level of complementary color. If you are starting from scratch, choosing a streamlined palette and purchasing with this buddy system mentality will work wonders for you. The science of basic wardrobe building will help you shop smarter, dress better and ultimately free up more time for the important things in life… your own friends.
