Summer is fast approaching, bringing with it sweltering commutes, frigid offices and the unique challenge of what to wear to accommodate both. Since I’m not a proponent of the “desk sweater”, aka: one of my fashion pet peeves, I thought I’d take the opportunity to offer some foolproof ways to beat the heat and look chic while doing it:
Fabric Selection
Start by choosing lightweight fabrics like printed silk chiffon or cotton voile: these will allow your pores to breathe while minimizing any embarrassing sweat mark situation. Layer with a jacket or blazer that has a bit of weight to it, preferably leather or a cotton blend that won’t wrinkle while its in your bag during the hotter segments of the commute.
Silhouette Choice
I love the look of a flowy printed dress (personally I prefer the midi length as it looks a touch more professional) back to a structured blazer, and this works well for the hot commute/air conditioned office combination. If this is too feminine for your liking, a wide-leg, cropped cotton sateen pant (bonus points for a trend-right paperbag waist) with a slim top and moto jacket is also a win.
Accessory Direction
Complete the look with a white, pointy mule or backless loafer, which will help to modernize any soft floral print. If you are commuting and changing shoes at the office, opt for a white slide or low-profile sneaker. Add a white or neutral tote that is large enough to hold your jacket and viola!
