Create a Budgeted Buy Plan

August 5th, 2013 admin

I spent a few days in the country this week and, while the days were gorgeous and sunny and warm, the nights were cool and it became evident that the need for cool weather clothes is almost here. I find this to be very exciting and also very tempting since fall is my favorite, both seasonally and sartorially. As such, I thought that now would be a good time to share a strategy that helps to keep my clients on track and in budget when transitioning.

Create a by-month purchase plan that identifies categorical need based on seasonal temperatures. For example, if you arent going to wear a heavy wool coat until November, it doesnt make sense to front end load in September. Purchase the lightweight fall coat at the beginning of September, the layering piece (aka fur vest or puffy vest) in October and the true outerwear piece at the beginning of November. Similarly, you will need ankle boots before you need fur-lined boots, so buy accordingly.

Many retailers buy product with a buy now, wear now mentality so you have a better chance of getting something you love if you wait until a full selection product hits the stores. Like anything else in life, timing is everything.
