Fake It Til You Make It

July 10th, 2013 admin

I will happily admit to being one of those people that, when complimented on low-priced clothing or accessories, blurts out the cost and retailer of the item in focus. I can’t help it – it’s like shopper’s tourettes. I love the reaction I get when a woman realizes that the cute shorts she is coveting are from Forever21. The greater the level of disbelief, the greater my level of satisfaction.

The primary reason that I get such a kick out of the above scenario is that I love letting other ladies know that they don’t need to spend a lot to look good. If you don’t have an unlimited clothing budget, fake it til you make it. You can find amazing, inexpensive product in the darnedest places if you pay attention to the following:

  • Proper fit – a great fit is the most important element in any garment – experiment with some of the lower priced retailers to identify which fits you best
  • Fabric quality – look for fabrics that feel good and drape well – places like Forever21 and JoeFresh offer 100% silk tops in the $30 range
  • Clean construction – pay attention to how a garment is made – avoid bumpy seams and cheap detailing like smocking or self belts

Once you satisfy the above requirements, add some personality by styling the items. Replace fabric belts with leather belts, add a few signature accessories or mix the items with some investment pieces and be prepared to raise some eyebrows.
