January has always been my least favorite month. The holidays are over, my New Year’s Eve birthday has passed, the weather in NYC is torturous and the fashion magazines are skinny and content-lean. Talk about depressing! There is, however, a silver lining on this cold cloud… Spring is right around the corner! Spring product will hit retailers very, very soon -as soon as February- and it is time to prepare our wardrobes for its arrival.
Here is my best advice to looking current on a budget: browse the runway images on www.style.com and make a list of colors, silouhettes, print direction or anything else that catches your eye. Knowing what the luxury brands and top-notch designers are doing can help to narrow your shopping scope. If you focus on what is trending, you can identify the pieces in your wardrobe that are still valid and ways to update or style the pieces that are in question. Most importantly, you can achieve newness with purchases from inexpensive retailers like Forever21 and H&M. I am loving the color citron, the preppy direction at Altuzarra and the use of black and white at Balenciaga (especially look 22 of 40 – the skirt looks like boucle but is actually a print on silk – I DIE!) and I am planning my purchases accordingly.
If you follow the strategy listed above, you won’t have to spend a ton of money to look current. Like everything else in life, a little planning can go a very long way. So take a look at some images, find inspiration and shout hooray for Spring 2013!
