Stuck in A Style Rut

June 21st, 2013 admin

I was recently hired by a client who wanted me to help redefine her style. Her current wardrobe projected a preppy, mid-forties soccer mom vibe – lots of cable knits, crewnecks and boring basics – but her child hadn’t even learned to walk yet. This style rut was perpetuated by the fact that, in an attempt to update her wardrobe, she was buying items that only varied slightly from what she already owned (ie. cable crewnecks in new pop colors and twinsets with fun buttons). She was cognizant of the fact that she was missing the mark and felt totally overwhelmed.

If you are trying to revamp your look and aren’t quite sure where to begin, it is best to take a cautious approach to purchasing new items. DO NOT go on a shopping spree and buy everything you see that you might like in one fell swoop – this approach will only further confuse the issue. Instead, edit your wardrobe. Go piece by piece, isolate the items that you really love and keep only the pieces that help you feel like your best self. Then start a style inspiration board. You don’t need to define your style in two words or limit yourself to one store. When you gather images that speak to you it is likely that you will notice commonalities – this will help you define your style and make better decisions when buying. Then, if all else fails, consult a professional.
