Back in 1997, when I was awarded the “best dressed” superlative by my high school graduating class, I decided to wear forest green Birkenstocks for the yearbook picture. With socks. Looking back, i think it is fair to say that 1) there was not a lot of fashion forward competition in my rural Massachusetts town and 2) I hit my style stride in college.
Fast forward almost 20 years: I am no longer cringing at the thought of that image. In fact, Birkenstocks are now trending so it appears that I was just way ahead of the curve. I can honestly say that I am excited about this resurgence. Whether it be the classic, authentic version (white and silver look especially fresh) or a copycat silhouette with interesting details (hello, printed calf-hair), I am on the Birk bandwagon. I especially love this heavily embellished pair from Zara and I plan to wear them all summer with super femme pieces…sans socks, of course!
