Trendy Not Spendy – Discount Shopping

August 28th, 2012 admin

I have a few clients who really love getting a “deal”. Whether it be sample sales, outlet shopping or discount stores these ladies just cannot get enough of the adrenaline rush they get when they find a designer label for a fraction of the department store price.

They get so amped about the discount that they lose sight of practicality. This “shopping with discount colored lenses” often leads to a closet that is overcrowded and underdeveloped. It pains me to see the number of tags still attached when I sort through these wardrobes. Thus, I have come up with some shopping tips to help narrow your scope and simplify your wardrobe.

Here are some questions to ask yourself when you are in the zone (remember, the exercise only works if you are honest with yourself)…

  • How does this piece fit into my current mix?
  • Can I think of at least three of my currently owned outfits that this piece would complement?
  • Would I still feel the same way about the item if it was full price?
  • Is this exactly what I am looking for or will it sit in my closet with other like-minded styles that I don’t love?

If you cannot answer these questions with ease put the item back and spend your money more wisely. You deserve better!

PS…In my previous life in the corporate fashion world I did a tremendous amount of business with off-price retailers and have a few quality based tips that I feel are also invaluable when discount shopping. If you are looking for designer pieces that are department store quality it is important to be aware of the back-neck labels and the hangtags attached to the goods. Target a few brands and become educated on what these look like at full price. Many designers do special cuts for off-price retailers that are lower quality fabrics and trims and will use slightly different labels – this is not the same caliber of product. I’m not saying you should avoid these purchases because some of this product is cute. Just be aware of what you are buying.
