Wardrobe Therapy: Dead Weight

June 16th, 2017 admin

The dictionary defines “dead weight” as the unrelieved weight of anything inert. As a stylist, I define dead weight as an item in your closet that is occupying physical and emotional space and has absolutely no place in your life. Unnecessary at best, suffocating at worst, dead weight is exhausting and restricts personal growth.

My unwavering recommendation: let it go.
Clothing from lifestyles past? Jewelry from boyfriends of yore? Hermes wedding china that has been sitting in a bin since you moved post-divorce (which can be sold on the RealReal, btw)…if it carries a story you no longer want to be tied to, it is weighing you down and it’s time to set it free.

If the item has absolutely no use to you present day, relieve yourself of the inert physical and emotional burden. Donate or liquidate the items and then celebrate. Use the proceeds to pay some bills, go on a vacation or buy yourself something new, whichever sparks the most joy.

I promise you, when you liberate yourself from the past and open yourself to new opportunities, your life (and your wallet) will thank you. I know mine just did!
