Inspired by the design process and building from the ground up, this fresh start mentality is seeping into all areas of my life, and I am highly motivated by the concept of only moving things that I absolutely love into my new home. Partly because I want to move as efficiently as possible, partly because there will be a short period of time that our belongings are in storage, but mostly because I want to release from my life the things that no longer suit me.
First stop: my closet. Even though I keep a very tightly edited wardrobe, there is always a bit more streamlining that can be done. For this last pass, I upped the ante by playing a game of “would you rather?” by asking myself the following two questions:
“Does having this item markedly improve my sartorial experience?”
If not, consign it. If the answer was yes, then I followed up with:
“Would you rather have this or an upgraded master bath?”
Not surprisingly, a lot of the items that made it through the first filter did not survive the second. Although perfectly suitable and useful, the pieces were expendable because my desire for a soaking tub and carrara marble far outweighed my need for Celine and Chloe.
More surprisingly, at least to me, was how much better I am at streamlining when the stakes are higher. Motivated by the fundraising challenge, I was able to look at my wardrobe through a new lens, and the outcome was fully worthwhile. I mean, don’t get me wrong, once this house is built I am buying myself a new handbag to celebrate. But that is a blog for another day 🙂
